It was a battle of families at the box office this weekend, but in the end, the Lamberts in the supernatural horror flick Insidious: Chapter 2 won top spot.
The sequel to 2011’s Insidious grossed some $41 million in North America, beating out the Robert De Niro mob action comedy The Family ($14.5 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Riddick, Lee Daniels’ The Butler and We’re the Millers round out the top five.
Insidious: Chapter 2‘s opening weekend comes as a huge victory for director James Wan and the folks at FilmDistrict, as the sequel was made on a budget of $5 million.
The scarefest, which opened on a fitting Friday the 13th, finds Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne reprising their roles as Josh and Renai Lambert.
On deck for the rest of September: Prisoners, Rush and Don Jon.
