Chelsea Vs West Brom – Team News, Match Preview & Likely Line-Ups

Venue: Stamford Bridge Referee: Lee Probert Date: 9th November

While the absence of the in-form Fernando Torres would be a problem for the Blues, Samuel Eto’o has performed well when deputising. Manager Jose Mourinho looks to be finally getting the best out of the striker and as a result it lifts the burden off the Chelsea midfield to be getting all the goals.

West Brom know all about the threat of Chelsea and how they’ll play, as manager Steve Clarke has long been a friend and former work colleague of Mourinho. He will name his side to nullify to threat of the Blues on the break, and will hope he can spring a counter at Stamford Bridge.

Team News

Chelsea will be without Marco Van Ginkel, Fernando Torres, and Ryan Bertrand. Manager Jose Mourinho revealed dropped midfielder Eden hazard will play against West Brom this weekend.

West Brom have a number of absentees a doubt for this weekend. Zoltan Gera, Ben Foster, George Thorne, and Billy Jones are ruled out, while Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe, Scott Sinclair, and Boaz Myhill are all doubts.

Recent Form

Chelsea recently lost away to Newcastle in the Premier League, but enjoyed an emphatic victory in the Champions League against Schalke, so Mourinho’s men will be buoyed by the European win in midweek. They are 2nd in the table, five points behind Arsenal after 10 games.

West Brom recently enjoyed a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace which ended a three-game run without a league victory. The Baggies have won just once on their travels in the league this season – against Manchester United.

Hull City Transfer News: Shane Long To Sign Before Window Shuts?

Shane Long

Hull City are closing in on the transfer of West Brom striker Shane Long, according to Sky Sports News sources (and now being reported by ITV News).

The 26-year-old has reportedly been granted permission to take leave of the Republic of Ireland squad this evening and return to England as speculation grows of a potential move to the KC Stadium. ITV News reports that Brom have given Long permission to hold talks with Steve Bruce’s newly promoted side over a switch.

Long recently spoke of the speculation surrounding his future, which is currently undecided with just one year left of his current deal and the option to sign for an extra 12 months.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, the former Reading man remarked:

“We’re still in talks. I have a year and an option left.

“I am looking forward to playing with West Brom and we’ll see how talks go. I’m not anxious – I’m still a West Bromwich Albion player.

“It’s up to club and agents to sort out anything else. I want to concentrate on my football.”

Shane Long did start yesterday’s 0-2 defeat at home to Swansea and the Albion number 9 has been a regular fixture for the club since he moved from Reading. However with manager Steve Clarke bringing in Nicolas Anelka in the summer and the uncertainty over Long’s contract, the Albion look to have decided that it was better to sell him now before losing him potentially for free next summer.

More info on this as it develops.
