WWE Raw Review: Daniel Bryan On Right Track?

Published May 12, 2014 by gossipzoo

Last week, I was very critical in the way Daniel Bryan was just chosen by John Cena for the SummerSlam main event. I felt it was more pandering to the audience. It didn’t feel like Daniel Bryan was seen on the same level of the WWE champion. It was more of a charity case. That was all rectified this week, deep in the heart of Texas from Austin.

The show begins with a drum roll again. (I guess that’s Brad Maddox theme song?)

We have the customary contract signing with the Raw GM and the two competitors. I like this for two reasons. I like this because there was no violence and they solidified why Daniel Bryan deserved the shot in the eyes of both John Cena and Daniel Bryan. I even like the effect of Brad Maddox showing doubts of the bearded wonder thanks to the influence of the higher power. For some reason it was never officially publicly said, but hinted at its Vince McMahon.

(Somehow I think, “It’s me Austin, it was me all along, Austin. Son of a Bitch!” needs to fit in here somewhere.)

Maddox sets up an open-ended gauntlet style main event in which Daniel Bryan should prove himself against his “doubters”. This is how you set up a strong underdog babyface. Have them fight from underneath against adversity. And Daniel definitely fit that bill, way more than John Cena. This was further illustrated in the backstage segment with the WWE champion and his upcoming challenger. Daniel Bryan showing tenacity telling Cena not the interfere in the proceedings of the main event. Stephanie and Triple H give their two cents on this decision saying that Maddox has to get on the right train of thought. I’m still not sure where this is going. I hope they don’t pull the rug out from under Bryan.

This seemed to be the night of persevering babyfaces as the in ring action began with Sheamus losing in a great effort to World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio. That contusion on his leg looked on the more nasty with his pale complexion. This is the most sympathetic the character of Sheamus has been in quite some time. No shenanigans, no hooligan behavior which usually makes him look like a dick.

Christian defeats Titus O’Neill in a surprisingly competitive match. I wonder if they’re getting behind pushing Titus as a single considering what they did with his partner and Dolph Ziggler later in the night. Young barely put up a fight as the show off hits the Zigzag rather easily.

The focus of the segment was on DZ and Langston continuing their cat and mouse game. Dolph embarrasses Big E , which I’m not sure of if it’s too quick to make him look that foolish taking some of the luster off the big man. They didn’t really touch on the romantic tension between AJ and Langston. I think that the more interesting angle here. But they look to be on the course for SummerSlam.

Cody Rhodes continues his collision course with Damien Sandow doing the turnbuckle tango with the birthday boy Fandango. The Intellectual Savior of the Masses was on commentary calling himself the uncrowned World Heavyweight Champion. Sandow tries to interfere but gets a Disaster Kick for his efforts. Rhodes capitalizes on the dazed Fandango by hitting CrossRhodes. If they’re not doing something with the briefcase a SummerSlam I will be very surprised.

CM Punk and Paul Heyman have a great back-and-forth as the battered and bruised Best in the World challenges Brock at SummerSlam. It shows that you can make someone a good guy without making him lose his edge. Perseverance and feeling a threat of a looming overpowering force makes a great underneath struggle.

They do an “if you did not see this week’s Smackdown” segment in which they repeat Mark Henry with the Shield and the Usos coming to the rescue of the World Strongest Man. I smell a six man tag coming at SummerSlam because that’s what they do. Especially Teddy Long..

Speaking of Teddy Long, we get a backstage segment the playa playa and Booker T being at odds over their job performance as GM. Does anybody care? What’s the endgame here? This seems like a storyline that just doesn’t seem to want to end. I know they were talking about a Booker heel turn. But now that he’s not in power does it even matter?

Ryback has gone away from being a whiny heel to more of a bully. Ryback looks better in this role, and much more menacing this way. This would play into later on in the night.

We have the worst segment of the night in the Miz TV Total Divas debacle. Apparently, Eva Marie is going to be the bitch on the show and they had to humiliate Jerry Lawler for some reason. The Miz invites the Hall of Famer into the ring, which was bizarre and leads to the King getting slapped. Why couldn’t they do that with the Miz?

(And why couldn’t they get her name right? Eva Marie, is that so hard? Not like it matters, but at least if she’s going to star on your show, you might want to get her name right.)

RVD and Wade Barrett have a less than stellar match together. As the Barrett barrage felt the potato nature of Rob Van Dam with a busted lip. In the end, a Five-Star Frog Splash finishes the contest. They announce, RVD will battle ADR on Smackdown this Friday. I’m still predicting that’s going to be the World Heavyweight Title Match for Los Angeles on August 14.

The main event was something spectacular as I think it really put Daniel Bryan on that next level. The master of The Yes Lock really showed what made him so popular in ROH with two great matches with the real Americans Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro. They gave this last half-hour the show. This was great. When Ryback came out it lost a little bit of luster as after being put through a table Bryan gets saved by John Cena. This leads to a tables match being set up between The WWE Champion and Ryback for next week.

(Didn’t we just see this at Payback?)

Then we go off the air with Vince McMahon influencing Maddox taking a match between Kane and Daniel Bryan for next week’s episode. Two problems. One, do we really want to see this after what we just witnessed ? And two, bring Kane back just out of the blue with no buildup considering the Wyatt family took him out just seems rather foolish.

Speaking of which, where was the Wyatt family? I guess we have to follow the buzzards. And another thing wasn’t The Big Show supposed to return last night? I wonder what’s going on there. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens next week.

TNA: Why The New Main Event Mafia Has Already FAILED

Published April 27, 2014 by gossipzoo

BeFunky_maxresdefault

TNA has dropped the ball so many times, I’ve lost count. The New Main Event Mafia had potential to be SPECIAL. That chance is now gone.

For starters, signing Rampage Jackson wasn’t necessarily a mistake as it appears that Bellator seems to be picking up most of the tab. TNA even did a great job of introducing him and having him face off with Kurt Angle. They were on the right track. If you’re going to have a MMA non wrestler feud with someone, there’s no one better than Kurt Angle. He can make anyone look good. There WAS money there.

Then TNA completely blew it. Having Rampage help Kurt Angle fight off The Aces and Eights was a HUGE mistake. They just flushed 3-6 months worth of money down the drain. People would’ve payed to see Angle vs Rampage. Now, not so much. Enter M.E.M.

The M.E.M. started off well, bringing back former members Sting, Angle and Samoa Joe. Then it took a turn. The M.E.M. was supposed to be a group that consisted of ONLY former World Champions. Well, Magnus isn’t a former anything. I do however understand why Dixie wanted him as part of the faction. He has the most to gain from the rub that the other guys will give him and it gives him instant credibility Magnus has potential to be a STAR. So I’m OK with it. What I’m not ok with is the newest member of the M.E.M.

WWE: Top 5 Returns That Would Make Big Improvement

Published April 24, 2014 by gossipzoo

There’s nothing better in WWE than a surprising return to the fold after time away from it. Just the sound of iconic entrance music can send a shiver down the spine. With the return of Rob Van Dam at Money in the Bank this weekend, it feels like the right time to take a closer look as to what other former stars would offer to today’s WWE.

This is nothing new, of course. Over the past few years, WWE have been working to lure back some of their most popular former wrestlers. The Rock and Brock Lesnar, the two potential returns that many thought would be an impossibility, became a reality in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Booker T, Chris Jericho, the New Age Outlaws (and countless others) have all made their returns too. Even the former stars that have been very outspoken about WWE in a negative light have been able to make a return to action. If there’s money to be made, then Vince McMahon can be very forgiving.

In this article, I will only take a look at those who could potentially make their return and be of benefit to the product as a whole. As much as I would love them both to return, there’s no Ultimate Warrior or Hulk Hogan listed here. Also, retirees such as Shawn Michaels and Edge are excluded also.

So, who could potentially return? Let’s count down the top five.

WWE

So TLC is done and the WWE can rest easy for 2013. Apart from a Post-TLC Raw and a Christmas Raw, the WWE can now turn it’s focus to the most important time of the wrestling year- the Road to Wrestlemania.

With the Royal Rumble still a good six weeks away, there is no doubt that there is some indication of how the top full-time stars will journey from here to Wrestlemania 30. Others, however, are still clouded in mystery. With that in mind, it’s time to list the possible roads to Wrestlemania.

N.B. Before we’d start I’d just like to say that this is a list of FULL TIME stars. That is why people like Triple H and the Undertaker will not be given their own entry.

In no particular order…

WWE: 10 Most Terrible Wrestling T-Shirts Of All Time

Published November 30, 2013 by gossipzoo

10 The Rock

Wrestling fans for the most part realise that the world of professional wrestling is its own little bubble. People outside the wrestling bubble don’t know much about the business and what little they do know, they rarely understand. And I don’t mean that as a criticism, it’s completely understandable. It’s no different from a friend being into a regular sport you don’t follow.

And wrestling is no different than other sports in having their own recognizable merchandise/jerseys to show support for the people we follow. The only difference is that while normal sports teams have the tradition of a variation on the same jerseys year after year, wrestling is constantly creating new characters and gimmicks and having to produce merchandise to coincide with every creation.

For the most part the best t-shirts are the ones that have simple logos or slogans that relate to the character. The worst, can be downright embarrassing. From the plain ugly to the ones that took some explaining when asking for a parent to buy, in this article we will be taking a look at some of the worst wrestling t-shirts ever.

WWE: 7 Creative Suggestions That Are Best For Business

Published November 29, 2013 by gossipzoo

Shane Mcmahon

Recently I have been using my new position among the ranks here at WhatCulture to highlight what I, an avid 25-year-plus veteran viewer and supporter of all things pro wrestling (not to mention a wannabe that never was), feel is wrong with the professional “wrasslin” business as it stands today. What really has opened my eyes is that many of you out there (my loyal minions, ha) in Internet-land are not all as smarky as I may have initially surmised.

I have had quite a few online conversations now with people who’ve taken my arguments on board and articulated an intelligent, coherent rebuttal or response, far more so than the expected backlash of actual “smarks” that I was expecting. It seems that I may have shut a few of them up, as just about every point I have showcased can be easily researched with the help of your friends over at Google, and makes many a smark argument invalid. Or as one superstar may put it, “THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!”

I am not here to convince you to either love or hate. I am merely here to present to you the facts and how I interpret them from my own point of view based upon my own life experiences. But, after a recent article (which you can read here) where I pointed out that a lot of films nowadays get a lot of flack simply because people can’t lighten up, I realised that although my first article was a positive, I should probably take my own advice as to not sound like a hypocritical douchebag.

So, with that in mind and a new “Positively Paige” outlook on life as I wake up to you this fine Australian morning, I bring to you 7 suggestions that in my opinion can only be what’s “good for business.” These are in fact changes I would make to the current WWE infrastructure as it stands right now, if I was given just one day to run things how I wanted to.

To keep with the current theme of staying positive, I will even go back and find a way to turn some of my previous negatives into positives with a single blast of logic that would even make Captain Spock crack a smile.

Let us begin.

Honorary Note: It’s Time For R.O.H. To Take It Up A Notch

Ring Of Honour

Now, as this has nothing to do with the WWE, it doesn’t obviously make the list, but with TNA all but sinking like a brick in the ocean, we need a “new” alternative. From what I get to see via YouTube or whatever, it seems to me that this fed could be the next big thing, but they dropped the ball big time after the infamous CM Punk pipe bomb.

They should’ve milked it for all that it was worth, but it’s not too late to invest some money and take the next step, because there is a spot that has opened up for a new number two that might not be there for much longer.

WWE Breaking News: Ted Dibiase Not Renewing Contract

Published September 23, 2013 by gossipzoo

Ted DiBiase, Jr. the son of the legendary Million Dollar Man has announced via a video posted on his YouTube channel that he is not renewing his WWE deal when it expires and fans should not expect him back on television in the meantime.

DiBiase, Jr. is a third generation wrestler whose family includes the aforementioned Million Dollar Man, his brothers Brett and Mike and grandfather ‘Iron’ Mike DiBiase. Despite having the sport of kings ingrained into his DNA the former prot g of Cody Rhodes, Manu (remember him?) and Randy Orton says that his decision not to sign a new deal is not a leverage attempt to ensure a future push or more money as he has no intentions of returning to a wrestling ring for some time – if at all. Instead the former Million Dollar champion, who’s biggest win was in a tag team match against Shawn Michaels and Triple H, will be focusing on his role as a father and husband something he feels is often overlooked by the men and women in the wrestling industry.

It is believed that Dibiase, Jr. will continue crafting a name for himself as an actor after appearing in several WWE funded films such as The Marine 2 and his own successful YouTube show The DiBiase Posse. He is also heavily involved in charity work through his own non-profit organization, the Ted DiBiase Foundation.

Although DiBiase hasn’t been seen on television since appearing as a Lumberjack in the John Cena Vs Ryback match on the June 10th episode of RAW the news that the 30 year old would be leaving the company has come as a huge shock. Although being relegated to dark matches and almost jobber status in recent years the upside of Ted was undeniable and many saw big things for him in the not too distant future.

WWE has not yet released a statement via dot com but it is expected to do so very soon.
