Newcastle United hope to have signed QPR striker Loic Remy within the next 48 hours, according to the Metro.

And the North East club’s new director of football Joe Kinnear revealed a deal for Aston Villa forward Darren Bent is also close to being struck.

When asked about the potentiality if signing Remy, who the Magpies made a failed attempt to sign in the January window, Kinnear said:

“Yeah I think very much, so I would like to think we are very, very close to agreeing that.

“I would think maybe Monday or Tuesday we will be a position to say yea or nay, but I am very happy about how that deal is going at the moment.”

The former Wimbledon boss also revealed the club are closing in on Bent, though they are likely to face stiff competition from newly-taken over Fulham, who have cash to spend this summer.

Kinnear admitted talks are on-going regarding the former Tottenham marksman, who appears to be surplus to requirement on Villa Park ahead of the new season.

“We were with Darren’s agent for two or three hours, we thrashed out a deal.

‘We are still in negotiations with Aston Villa so there is a really strong possibility there.”

Newcastle’s hopes of signing Bent appeared to be on the rocks last week after it was revealed the Magpies were only willing to pay 2 million for the 29-year-old, who was left feeling unimpressed with Kinnear and the club’s offer.

But it seems to have been revived now and Newcastle hope both he and Remy join the incoming Bafetimbi Gomis in the next few days, with Gomis set to join for 8 million from French side Lyon.

Toward the end of last month, it emerged Queens Park Rangers raised Loic Remy’s release clause by 2 million, putting his long-term future at Newcastle in doubt.

These developments mean Newcastle, who signed Remy on loan at the beginning of the season, will have to stump up 10 million if they want to take the French star on permanently.

But there are further complications in that Remy refused to commit himself to the Toon beyond his current, 12 month deal, which is set to expire next summer.

The 26-year-old said recently:

“I will look at whatever offers come in – whether they be from Newcastle or whether they be from QPR. Then I’ll consider what is best for me and for my future career.

“The most important thing at the moment is playing well at Newcastle, then hopefully trying to get a more regular position in the French squad.

“And then, afterwards, I am still a QPR player. I am just here on loan.”

The French striker memorably snubbed the Magpies last January in favour of QPR and there are genuine concerns he may do the same again at the end of the season.

Remy has been found in terrific form since joining Newcastle on a temporary basis earlier this summer, and is the club’s leading goalscorer thus far with 6 strikes to his name.

Which is why any potential return to his parent club, or elsewhere, in seven months would be a devastating blow for the North East outfit.

To safeguard themselves from this potential hammer blow, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew should begin looking at replacement strikers in the New Year, and here’s 5 we had in mind.
