Man City vs Man Utd: Why Yaya Toure Is A Key Player In Derby

Manchester City’s box-to-box midfielder Yaya Toure is widely regarded as one of the side’s most influential players since signing from Catalan giants Barcelona in 2010.

Often known for his rampaging runs through midfield and his casual swagger style of play, Toure has risen to star status during his time in the Premier League. He’s been utilised largely in two positions for the Citizens – as a holding midfielder or a central midfielder given license to roam up the pitch.

This season has once again seen him playing a relinquished role in midfield, positioned in front of the defence as protection. New manager Manuel Pellegrini has used the 30-year old to break up the attacks and move the ball on in a swift fashion, or to set up counter attacks – dribbling the ball out of midfield at a minimum.

When title rivals Manchester United come to town this weekend, the Ivory Coast international will be a key player for the hosts. Yaya Toure has boasted high ball-retention stats early on this season – a 90.8% pass completion, while making an average of 86.8 passes per league game.

Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney will have been targeted as the two biggest creative threats to the side, and the pair will need to be kept from picking out passes in the final third whenever possible.

As Rooney can often drop very deep to receive the ball, the job to stop both him and Carrick from playing will be on Yaya Toure, and should he collect the ball after making a challenge or interception, he’ll then be required to launch a counter-attack or to simply play it to an available teammate close-by.

Toure could be a pivotal player for Manchester City this weekend, and he could well be the one who decides which sides come out the victors in the pending clash.

Can Manchester City avenge their 3-1 defeat in this corresponding fixture last season when they travel to Southampton in the Premier League?

Team News

Southampton’s injury crisis has worsened after Victor Wanyama suffered a hairline fracture of the leg and Nathaniel Clyne injured his pelvis in the midweek defeat to Aston Villa.

Jose Fonte is a doubt though Gaston Ramirez is back in contention after recovering from illness.

Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany should retain his place in the starting XI after returning from injury on Wednesday but Matija Nastasic, David Silva and Stevan Jovetic are all sidelined with calf injuries.

Key Stats

Southampton’s 3-1 victory over Manchester City in the corresponding fixture last season was Mauricio Pochettino’s first win in charge.

City are on a run of three consecutive victories, their best run under Manuel Pellegrini.

Southampton are on a run of three consecutive defeats, their worst run under Pochettino.

Pellegrini’s side have won just two matches away from home in this season’s Premier League (W2, D1, L4).

Likely Line-Ups

Gazzaniga, Lovren, Fonte, Shaw, Yoshida, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, Davis, Ramirez, Lambert, Rodriguez

Man City
Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Nasri, Toure, Fernandinho, Navas, Aguero, Negredo

As Southampton approached a hectic winter schedule, their most recent run of fixtures always looked difficult on paper, and were perhaps a test of their credentials to finish in the top 5 this season.

Unfortunately for the previously-high-flying Saints, they failed that test with three consecutive defeats to Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa, which has taken the wind out of Mauricio Pochettino’s sails somewhat.

Now they face City and are in real danger of making it four defeats out of four on Saturday.

Pochettino’s men will take some comfort however from the fact they beat their visitors in this corresponding fixture 3-1 last season and will certainly show the pluck that made them so difficult to break down against Arsenal.

But a devastating run of injuries hasn’t helped and a side that once boasted the best defensive record in Europe has now conceded eight in three games.

Against a City team who have scored 10 more goals than any other side in the division and 12 in their last three league games, I’m backing the Saints’ losing run to continue.

Can Manchester City continue their revival with another much-needed win against Norwich City on Saturday?

Team News

Manchester City could be without striker Stevan Jovetic and defender Vincent Kompany for the visit of Norwich City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Jovetic picked up a knock in the mid-week win over Newcastle in the Capital One Cup, while Kompany faces a race against time to prove his match fitness having missed the last two games with a thigh injury.

Norwich are sweating over the availability of Nathan Redmond and Robert Snodgrass, who picked up knocks against Manchester United midweek.

Alex Tettey, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Elliot Bennett are slight doubts for the trip to the Etihad.

Key Stats

Sergio Ag ero has scored four goals in three Premier League starts against Norwich.

Norwich are the only team yet to score a goal in the first half hour of a Premier League game this season.

Norwich are the last away team to taste victory in the Barclays Premier League at the Etihad, winning 3-2 on the final day of the 2012-13 season.

The Citizens have scored in each of their last 54 Premier League home games.

Likely Line-Ups

Man City
Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Nastasic, Demichelis, Clichy, Fernandinho, Toure, Nasri, Silva, Negredo, Aguero

Ruddy, Martin, Turner, Bassong, Olsson, Howson, Fer, Redmond, Elmander, Pilkington, Wolfswinkel

Manchester City will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against Chelsea in their last Premier League game when they play host to struggling Norwich.

City have made a slow start to their league campaign, currently sitting in seventh place, having won three of their last six matches in the league.

They lost their last game thanks to a dreadful mistake from Joe Hart, who might well find himself dropped for this clash, with No.2 Costel Pantilimon impressing against Newcastle in the League Cup midweek.

Things are hardly much better for Norwich, either, with the Canaries managing to win only two of their first nine league matches so far this season.

Manager Chris Hughton will be feeling the pressure with his side occupying one of the relegation spots, and I’m tipping them to stay there this weekend following a thumping City win.

I expect a backlash here.

Manchester City vs Ajax – Match Preview & Team News

Published November 7, 2012 by gossipzoo

Venue: Etihad Stadium Date: Tuesday, 6 November Kick-off: 19:45 GMT

Coverage: Live on ITV 1

Premier League champions Manchester City welcome Dutch side Ajax to the Eithad Stadium tonight as the two battle it out in the Champions League Group D game, which will be screened live on ITV 1 in the UK.

Manchester City are currently bottom of Group D having only managed a point in their last three games. Ajax however are third and a win tonight could see them go five points clear of Man City.

Roberto Mancini’s side crashed out of the Champions League Group stages last year and despite impressive performances from the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero this campaign, the club could be facing a similar fate again.

Group D or this year’s ‘group of death’ is made up of Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Manchester City.

The last time these two sides met was only 13 days ago which ended in Ajax sealing a 3-1 win in front of their home crowd.

Team News

Manchester City will face another tough challenge tonight with Joleon Lescott (back), James Milner (hamstring), Micah Richards (knee), Maicon (foot), David Silva (hamstring) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) all set to miss out

Manchester City’s provisional squad: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Nasri, Garcia, Y Toure, Aguero, Tevez, Balotelli.

Ajax’s provisional squad: Vermeer; Van Rhijn, Alderweireld, Moisander, Blind; Poulsen, Sch ne, De Jong; Sana, Eriksen, Babel

This game is a must win for Roberto Mancini. If his side fail to win again, City could slip into the Europa League or failing that could drop out of Europe completely.
